Chapter 7

007 Doesn't Count Before It Rains

3 min read718 words

“How much farther do we have to go?” Looking at the sky growing darker and darker, Su Zhirui couldn’t help asking. In the middle of the night, dressed in white robes and drifting about like that—he looked terribly eerie.

“We’ll be there after crossing a few more mountains.” The answer was still indifferent. A certain man did not seem tired at all; he hadn’t even shed a single drop of sweat. Even more exaggeratedly, no matter how steep the slope he climbed, his face did not redden and his breath did not quicken. Had he spent his life hauling sacks of rice?

“Then may I ask, why must we go to Ruoshui?” Su Zhirui didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. After moving with such tireless effort, just what was so good about Ruoshui?

“Business.” He finally stopped and motioned for her to get down from his back.

“Can you not be so miserly with your words?” Standing up straight, Su Zhirui rubbed her numb legs. Her phoenix eyes fixed on the man before her as she let out an utterly speechless sigh.

“I’ll try.”

“Who am I?” Truly a little angry now, Su Zhirui asked pointedly.

“My wife.” The man took the bundle from her as he answered, but he did not even bother to lift his eyelids at her.

“Your enemy.” Spitting out those three words hatefully, Su Zhirui then found a smooth rock and sat down. Her willow brows furrowed as she sensed something was off. Yi Feng also became alert and was just about to step forward, but unexpectedly, one of Su Zhirui’s feet suddenly landed on the ground. The head of a certain venomous snake was immediately flattened into an oval, while its body struggled and writhed nonstop.

“Move your foot.” Yi Feng’s tone was very heavy as he said displeasedly. This woman was actually this fierce—it was not as simple as merely wiping boogers on him.

“It’s comfortable to step on.” Su Zhirui curled her lips disdainfully and simply refused to comply. Who told her to have a personality that feared neither heaven nor earth?

“Huh? It’s dead already?” Only after despising it for quite a while did she move her little foot away. So animals in ancient times were this unable to withstand torment.

“Its head was flattened by you. Of course it couldn’t survive.” Sitting down on the rock as well, Yi Feng reached into the bundle for a steamed bun. After groping around for a while, his hand came out empty. Where was there still any trace of steamed buns?

“Ah? So you can say such long sentences after all.” Delighted, Su Zhirui handed over the only half of a steamed bun left in her hand.

“We’ll rest here for the night.” He did not respond to her mockery and promptly used the bundle as a pillow beneath his head.

“My lord, please explain—what if another venomous snake comes?” Seeing him lie flat on the rock, Su Zhirui asked.

“Aren’t you good at stepping on them?”

“What if it rains?”

“It doesn’t count before it rains.”

“What if a bird shits on your face?”

“…”

What answered her was actually a faint snore. Su Zhirui couldn’t help raising her head to the sky and sighing deeply. It seemed she needed to straighten out her character. She really was afraid of venomous snakes, ferocious beasts, insects, rats, and ants, so she simply sat beside him like that. He had carried her such a long way during the day; he had to be tired. Although he said nothing, the fatigue between his brows could still be seen.

She just sat there quietly, listening to the howls of wolves and cries of birds in the forest, along with other faint, fragmented sounds. The heavens were quite cooperative: it did not rain, and no birds built nests on him or shat on him. Not only that, there was also beautiful moonlight for her to admire. Perhaps, if she kept watching, she might even see Jiong-Jiong Hero fly past beside the moon.

Thinking that her older brother and father must have gone mad with worry, she still refused to go back. Even if she were beaten to death, she would not go back.

As for this man before her, could she trust him wholeheartedly?
