During the Ming Dynasty’s Wanli era, merchant’s daughter Zhu Sangyu is cast out by her father and stepmother, clutching only a marriage contract as she journeys to Yangzhou to wed into the Cheng family. There she encounters three men who will shape her destiny: her honorable fiancé Cheng Huaishi, the wealthy gentleman Qin Mingxu, and the despised factory guard Feng Gao—each offering a different path through a life of political turmoil, missed connections, and heartbreaking partings.
