Chapter 3 Shibuya Incident

6 min read1,461 words

The Shibuya Incident was a cursed spirit riot that took place in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo.

The cursed spirits used the Special Grade cursed object [Prison Realm] to seal the strongest jujutsu sorcerer, Gojo Satoru, gaining a brief period of freedom to act.

Jujutsu sorcerers rushed to the scene, fighting to save countless lives within the subway station.

That great battle nearly reduced Shibuya Ward to a wasteland, and it had an extremely far-reaching impact on the subsequent plot.

“Tomorrow. Tomorrow is the day the Shibuya Incident happens!”

Chen Lai was somewhat excited. So many cursed tools and cursed spirits appeared in that battle; the chance of rare items dropping would be even greater!

Countless professional gold farmers stared at the livestreams of various game worlds every day, waiting for major events to occur, because major events meant great chaos, and chaos was the essential prerequisite for big loot to appear!

Unfortunately, the gold farmers did not understand the plots of the various worlds in detail. Players had to pay every time they entered the game, but their time inside the game could not exceed one month at most. Otherwise, evacuation would fail, and they would lose the game assets they had brought in.

Therefore, there were no gold farmers who could take root in a particular instance. Everyone simply waited for major events—when a major event appeared, they would enter to make money.

Chen Lai was different. He knew when the major events would occur. If possible, he could even trigger them ahead of time!

The penguin waddled over to the shore. Beyond the boundless snow country were over a hundred deep-sea whirlpools. Dark and profound, they looked as if they would devour people whole.

These were the entrances to the various instances. Players called them [Great Maelstroms].

Along the long shoreline, many penguins were shouting, “Thousand-yuan escort!” This was also a derivative service. They were responsible for bringing children into instance worlds for an experience; as long as they could bring them out safely, they could make money.

After all, there were quite a few bastard players who preyed on “fries,” and they would not spare the equipment on children either.

Wobbling along, Chen Lai walked up to the Great Maelstrom belonging to [Shibuya Incident] and plunged in headfirst.

Dun dun dun!

Battle-preparation music rang out.

[Confidential—Shibuya Incident (Admission Assets: 50,000 yuan)]

[Pre-battle preparation time. This game will last one month. You must evacuate from the designated location within the time limit. The timer begins from the moment you enter the instance.]

[Your game item: Black Flash (C-rank), a technique capable of producing a special critical hit. Value: 45,000 yuan.]

[Cursed Energy (D-rank), the essential power of a jujutsu sorcerer. Without cursed energy, one cannot see cursed spirits. Value: 5,000 yuan.]

[Bank Balance: 100,000 yuan]

These were the items the original owner had spent money to buy. Entering [Shibuya Incident] with these two things was no different from walking in to get slaughtered.

Fortunately, he had taken out a small loan. This time, he had more choices!

“Sell Black Flash and Cursed Energy.”

“Search for Heavenly Restriction items.”

Chen Lai operated in rapid succession. A complete plan had already formed in his mind.

[Black Flash] and [Cursed Energy] were sold by Chen Lai at their original price. Fortunately, Deep Sea Company did not lowball when buying back items; otherwise, Chen Lai would have felt terrible.

His total assets reached 150,000. Chen Lai turned his gaze toward the Heavenly Restriction items.

[Heavenly Restriction (B-rank): A curse capable of strengthening the physical body. The cursed person will lose cursed energy. Value: 150,000 yuan.]

“This is the one!”

Chen Lai pressed the purchase button. He knew that this single Heavenly Restriction would not be enough. In a major battle like the Shibuya Incident, where Special Grades were everywhere, he would only be cannon fodder.

But that was fine. He had a way!

[Current main weapon: Heavenly Restriction (B-rank). Battle-preparation entry requirements have been met. No recovery items purchased. Deploy?]

“Is the deployment point random, or can I choose?” Chen Lai rubbed his hands together. Only one question remained.

[Random deployment in an uninhabited area near the event location. Evacuation points refresh at fixed intervals every ten days.]

“No problem, then. Deploy me!”

Dun dun dun dun!

The battle-preparation music rang out once more. Bubbles generated by the Great Maelstrom surged over, completely enveloping Chen Lai.

[Confidential—Shibuya Incident]

[Deployment Time: October 30th, 6:00 p.m.]

[Deployment Location: Shibuya Tram Line 3]

[We wish you an enjoyable game and gold in one run.]

……

Tokyo, Shibuya Ward.

The afternoon snow distorted the light cast by the setting sun. A signboard reading “Okonomiyaki” combined with a picture of a female celebrity posing coquettishly, forming a strange kind of harmony.

A tram passed through Shibuya Ward. On board, a middle-aged office worker was opening a bento, with a small cup of sake placed beside it.

Thud!

A noise came from the seat behind the man. He did not turn around. The time for enjoying delicious food should not be disturbed by some boring person in the back seat.

The office worker broke apart his disposable chopsticks, pressed his hands together, and quietly murmured the pre-meal phrase, “I humbly receive.”

Then he watched helplessly as an arm bulging with blue veins reached out from behind him and snatched away his bento.

“Oh, blue marlin bento, and it even comes with sake? You Japanese sure know how to eat.”

A young man’s voice came from the rear seat. Chen Lai stood up, snatched the chopsticks from the office worker’s hand, then picked up his sake and drained it in one gulp.

The office worker dared to be angry but did not dare to speak. The muscles beneath this young man’s shirt were bulging; one look was enough to tell he was not someone to provoke. As a corporate slave who rarely exercised, he could only swallow his anger.

Chen Lai glanced at the bento’s value. It showed no value.

That was normal. In a world with cursed energy like this, major gold and major red drops would only be items related to cursed energy.

However, the bento could be eaten. In the game world, if one did not eat, one would still get hungry. Players who starved to death would fail to evacuate, and the punishment would be the same as becoming lost.

“Burp~”

Chen Lai swiftly devoured the office worker’s blue marlin bento. Throughout the entire process, the office worker sat there watching him pitifully, yet did not dare ask him to return the bento at all.

After finishing, Chen Lai tossed the empty box back onto the table, then patted the office worker’s shoulder with his greasy hand.

“Thanks for the meal. I didn’t expect you island-country people to be so warm and hospitable. On account of this meal, I’ll give you a piece of advice.”

“Starting today and until the end of next month, leave Shibuya. Go anywhere you want, just don’t stay in Shibuya… Consider it payment for this meal.”

After saying that, Chen Lai kicked the tram window to pieces. Under the office worker’s shocked gaze, he swam out of the carriage like a fish.

Outside the tram was Shibuya’s bustling commercial district. JKs who had just gotten out of school walked arm in arm through the streets. Though it was winter, their black cotton tights and scarves still preserved that youthful flavor.

Chen Lai jumped down from the moving tram under the shocked gazes of these young girls, and he even landed steadily.

What was this, some kind of Superman? Were the U.S. forces stationed in Japan experimenting on a new Captain America again?

Chen Lai patted the dust off his body and felt fantastic. The physical body granted by a 150,000-yuan Heavenly Restriction really was different.

“Hey, girl over there.”

Chen Lai pointed at the prettiest one among the JKs and beckoned to her.

“Huh? Me?”

Toyokawa Yosuke pointed at herself in a daze and looked toward her friends beside her, only to discover that they had already run off.

“Yes, you. Stop looking… Your friends just ran away. I’m not a bad person. I’m just not very familiar with the local terrain. Help point me in the right direction, and I’ll pay you.”

Chen Lai spoke very quickly, and his thinking was also very clear. What he needed to confirm now was one thing—the location of the building where the séance summoning of the “Heavenly Tyrant,” Fushiguro Toji, occurred during the Shibuya Incident.

If he wanted to get items in this instance with its danger level maxed out, he needed power. And the most readily available power was to find Fushiguro Toji to fight on his behalf!
