Chapter Nine: Yunxiu After returning to Yinlü Xuan, the little maid who had been serving her before had run off to who knew where. Fortunately, the room had been cleaned up; otherwise, Hua Ling would certainly have been even angrier. Now that she was back, she took a careful look at the place. It was truly shabby, without a single decent decoration.
Fortunately, the roof did not leak and the windows were not broken, so it was still fit for habitation. She had never suffered like this in her previous life. Though her family could not be called the richest in China, their assets still amounted to hundreds of millions. She had lived in a luxurious villa, with crowds of maids and bodyguards attending her; since birth, she had never once lived in such a shabby house. She could not help letting out a heavy sigh.
Having come here to face this unfamiliar world, Hua Ling was truly grateful that, in order to cultivate her, her father had spent so many years constantly sending her to study in various countries, until she obtained a degree in economic management, an MRA. An MBA signified outstanding ability, courage, and character; it represented wealth, status, power, and honor; it foretold hope, success, and brilliance. She only wondered whether all this could help her turn her fortunes around in this backward ancient era.
After waiting an entire day without seeing Mu Yelei come looking for her, Hua Ling could not help finding it a little strange. However, although she did not wait him out, at dinnertime she did wait out a table full of delicious delicacies, making her mouth water at the sight.
It seemed this Mu Yelei could still be considered a man; he was fairly true to his word. Hua Ling feasted heartily on the delicious dishes and ate to her heart’s content. Turning her head, she saw the little maid who had vanished for an entire day standing at the side to serve her, and could not help feeling angry. This one was also a snobbish servant.
Hua Ling found it somewhat odd. The little maid’s expression was rather strange. With a slight turn of her brows, she said, “What is your name?” Sweat!! She had been here a whole day and still did not know the girl’s name!
Hearing Hua Ling’s question, the little maid hurriedly answered in a proper and respectful manner, “Replying to Madam, this servant is called Yunxiu.”
“Where did you go today? I didn’t see even a shadow of you all day.” Hua Ling asked while eating, glancing at her from the corner of her eye.
The matter of Hua Ling making a huge scene in the study today had already spread like wildfire, and the little maid naturally knew of it as well. Her eyes reddened, and she said, “Madam, ever since you came to Yinlü Xuan, it has always been Yunxiu serving you. Though this servant cannot claim to have treated you especially well, I have never bullied you either. Now that you have turned things around and wish to find fault with this servant, I, a mere servant, cannot say anything. I only beg Madam, considering that I have at least served you with all my heart, not to drive me out of the Prime Minister’s residence. Even if you give me the hardest and most exhausting work, Yunxiu is willing.”
Seeing her manner, it seemed there was something difficult for her to say. Besides, when Hua Ling had met that young cousin miss today, she had already learned that no one in the entire residence treated her as a mistress. Hearing Yunxiu speak this way, she realized Yunxiu had already been quite decent to Xia Ziying. “Is something the matter with you?”
Yunxiu wiped her tears and choked out, “This servant’s mother has fallen ill. I don’t have much money to get her treated. If Madam drives me out as well, my mother and I will have no way to live. This servant begs Madam not to drive me away. I’m willing to work like an ox or horse.” The little maid knelt on the ground and kowtowed as she spoke.
“Get up. So the reason you weren’t here all day was because you went to see your mother.” Hua Ling sighed. She was a filial child; perhaps Hua Ling had overthought things. “How is your mother now?”
“Replying to Madam, my mother’s high fever still won’t subside. I have no money to hire a doctor, and I don’t know how much longer my mother can hold on.” As Yunxiu spoke, her tears fell even harder, until she was sobbing too much to form words.
Hua Ling stood up and walked to the dressing table. She opened Xia Ziying’s jewelry box. Inside were only a few pitiful pieces of jewelry. She simply picked them all up and walked over to Yunxiu. “Take these. Exchange them for some money and treat your mother’s illness.”
