Chapter 13 The Wolf King's Earnest Invitation (First Update!)

6 min read1,347 words

“Omninet Notification: Teleportation successful. Character has been successfully teleported to the instance world…”

“Plash!”

Within the interlaced shadows of the dense forest, the Omninet’s notification remained clearly visible.

Yet at that very moment, Yi Qingfeng had stepped straight into muddy water…

Why is the water this deep here?

Yi Qingfeng looked down at the standing water seeping up through the humus layer beneath his feet.

The thick fog around him brought back a few memories of the time he had once spent working in the mountains.

Sunlight filtered through the towering canopy, adding a faint, misty outline to the fog that enveloped everything.

There should be plenty of mushrooms in a place like this…

Yi Qingfeng could not help thinking so.

He did not sense that bone-piercing chill from the tomb.

The surrounding vegetation, too, stretched outward with vibrant vitality.

Yi Qingfeng’s arrival had also disturbed quite a few crawling things.

He did not even get a clear look at what they were:

All he saw were winding trails left behind as they slithered away through the waterlogged forest shrouded in fog…

Yi Qingfeng raised the warhammer in his hand.

Faced with this scalp-prickling scene, his heart at this moment was utterly calm.

Or rather:

It was like the surface of water before a storm, still and congealed as a mirror…

After two days of slaughter, the ordinary shell piled upon him had been worn away bit by bit.

Something less gentle was seeping out from within…

And so, he strode toward the depths of the mist.

Before long, a vast clearing appeared in Yi Qingfeng’s field of vision:

Large amounts of charred remains and the remnants of building foundations.

They allowed Yi Qingfeng to vaguely make out what its former outline had once been.

Now, only a stretch of broken walls and ruined structures remained.

In the damp air, gray-white mold had wrapped around these relics of the past.

And it was at that moment:

“Awooo!”

A shrill wolf howl pierced through layer after layer of mist, coming from the depths of the dense forest!

It was a wild call utterly different from the occasional barking of dogs that might be heard late at night in the small town.

And following that wolf howl, more howls came from every corner of the forest.

For a time, it was as though countless wolf packs had vaguely surrounded him!

Compared to the goblins and wild boars that had charged over in groups, these worgs seemed to possess greater hunting wisdom.

Yi Qingfeng did not act rashly.

Compared to the dense forest filled with trees and pools of standing water,

this campsite once opened up by adventurers was undoubtedly more suitable for him to fight in.

The wolf pack did not hurry to attack, instead using the cover of the thick fog to prowl around him.

Until:

An enormous blue-gray worg slowly walked out from within the mist.

For an instant, Yi Qingfeng could sense a scrutinizing intent in those cold, ghostly blue eyes.

Without question, this was the Wolf King.

It was also the first monster with a leader template that he had truly faced.

This Wolf King, described on the Omninet panel as a “Frenzied Wolf,” did not possess the bloodthirsty recklessness implied by the literal meaning of its name.

Or perhaps, due to certain considerations:

It had not first dispatched its claws and fangs to wear down his strength.

However:

Yi Qingfeng clearly had no intention of remaining in this stalemate.

He ignored the wolf howls that drifted constantly within the surrounding fog, seeming both like harassment and like danger.

Instead, he fixed his gaze firmly upon that enormous Wolf King.

In the next instant:

That wild power, as though born from an utterly alien instinct, caused Yi Qingfeng’s body to erupt forward!

The earth, pampered by the damp air, instantly exploded into a spray of mud and debris:

Boar Charge!

A bloodline ability that carried a faint hint of mockery, yet when manifested in the material world, it came forth with unstoppable savagery!

The clumsiness that made it difficult to change direction corresponded to a ferocity that charged straight ahead without turning back!

The Frenzied Wolf had no time to react before the warhammer, wreathed in bloody radiance, slammed into it!

Having initiated a charge for the first time, Yi Qingfeng also found it difficult to control where his attack landed.

The warhammer grazed the Wolf King’s massive body and smashed into the upper part of its right haunch.

The intense pain made the Wolf King instinctively bite at the enemy before it.

Through his battle-damaged motorcycle helmet, Yi Qingfeng could smell that overwhelming stench of blood and rot!

In the next instant:

Crack!

Accompanied by the helmet splitting under the unbearable strain, the Wolf King bit down on Yi Qingfeng’s left shoulder!

Under the bone-piercing pain:

Yi Qingfeng swung the warhammer down once more!

At this moment, he could not see the Wolf King’s body clearly at all.

But there was no longer any need to aim.

Now was the moment to stake his life!

The warhammer, wrapped in the power of slaughter, smashed down again!

This blow made the Wolf King stagger, nearly collapsing to the ground.

The Most Holy Strike that had earlier carried the force of the charge had severely affected its movements.

Only by relying on the immense life bonus granted by its leader template had it managed to escape the fate of being beheaded by a single hammer blow.

The sacred power that originated from primordial slaughter pierced through its seemingly fluffy yet exceptionally tough, heavy fur.

And the Sacred Covenant hanging at Yi Qingfeng’s waist granted that power an additional radiance.

The thing it had relied upon to win countless bloody battles in the past

clearly did not possess the might to withstand sacred power…

Thus, a trace of grim resolve surfaced in those bestial eyes.

The Wolf King suddenly dragged its hind leg, which had already lost the strength to move properly, and ran toward the edge of the camp.

And just as Yi Qingfeng moved to pursue:

It abruptly stopped, and its tail, like a steel whip, lashed straight toward Yi Qingfeng!

Thud!

Yi Qingfeng, completely unprepared for this, felt as though he had taken a solid blow from a cudgel!

He nearly failed to catch his breath.

For an instant, his vision darkened…

Yet the Wolf King, which had forced itself through its injuries to launch this counterstrike, had now completely lost the strength to struggle.

After a brief moment of recovery, Yi Qingfeng, somewhat steadied, walked up to the fierce beast.

What puzzled him was:

Even now, it had not summoned its wolf pack.

Was it because of that rather unreliable arrogance of a king?

Or was it a behavioral restriction under ordinary difficulty?

Yi Qingfeng looked at those azure eyes that, even from within the pool of blood, still stared fixedly at him.

Without the slightest mercy, he brought down the fatal blow!

“Omninet Notification: You have slain the Frenzied Wolf. You have obtained leader drops: Wolf King’s Cordial Invitation (Abyss Difficulty Extra Challenge Item), Fang of the Wild (Purple/Accessory), Demonized Ashes ×2!”

“Omninet Notification: You have completed the instance objective. You may choose to immediately exit the instance and proceed to settlement…”

…………

…………

Yi Qingfeng looked at the notification information refreshing on his retina.

Exit?

He had invested so many talent points into monster packs, and it certainly was not just so he could take a single bite out of the leader.

Only a pack of worgs remained.

It was the perfect opportunity to farm slaughter experience.

And under Yi Qingfeng’s gaze:

With the Wolf King’s death, it was as though some restriction had been lifted.

Within the mist:

Countless green, gleaming eyes emerged.

One worg after another, though not as enormous as the Wolf King, yet still far stronger and sturdier than ordinary wolfdogs, walked out from the mist…

Charge!

Without further hesitation, Yi Qingfeng locked onto the nearest worg and directly launched Boar Charge!

A mere pack of wolves!
