Chapter 10

010 Failure Is Success's Mom

4 min read870 words

Even if he wanted her to farm, he should at least have left her something to eat first, right? Even if he didn’t leave anything cooked, he should have left something raw, shouldn’t he? In the end, that damned man hadn’t even left her a rat. Fortunately, she knew how to survive in the wild. She might not be able to catch wild rabbits, but surely she could catch turtles, right?

And so, in the days that followed, Su Zhirui went to the fields to pull weeds during the day, and at night she went up the mountain to hunt rabbits. When she had free time, she sat in the open yard and roasted meat; when the night sky was beautiful, she counted the stars. Just like that, ten days passed without her realizing it, while the man of her house still hadn’t shown hide nor hair. The few fields in front of the house had already been cleared clean. The soil was fertile and needed no plowing, and even the water was ready-made. No wonder Yi Feng had insisted on throwing her into this place no matter what.

Lazily scattering the seeds, then weaving a grass shelter to cover them, Su Zhirui tilted her head back and let out a long, deep sigh. At last, she could rest for a while.

Sitting at the edge of the paddy field, Su Zhirui languidly closed her eyes.

That was right. She liked the ordinary. She liked having no money, no power, no influence. She wanted to find a shoulder to lean on, but that didn’t mean the man of her house had to play runaway husband with her, did it?

And once he left, he was gone for more than ten days. Did he not know she was in a completely unfamiliar place? Unable to help herself, Su Zhirui wiped at her tears and began to cry in grievance. After crying for a short while, she got up again and walked back to the open space before the house to start a fire and roast meat.

“Looks like you’ve been living quite well.” A man’s voice suddenly sounded beside her, seemingly mixed with a trace of mockery.

“I didn’t see anything.” Glancing sideways, Su Zhirui immediately turned her head back again.

“Hey, you’re not allowed to sit on the stool I made.” Seeing Yi Feng walk into the house and sit down on the wooden stool, Su Zhirui immediately rushed forward, snatched it away, and held it protectively in her arms.

Yi Feng glanced at her and said nothing, continuing toward the kitchen.

“You’re not allowed to use my face towel.” Snatching the white face towel from a certain man’s hand, Su Zhirui screamed in alarm without stopping.

Yi Feng still looked at her calmly, then went off to do something else. But given Su Zhirui’s blanket prohibitions, Yi Feng discovered that the only place he could stay now was the latrine, because there was nothing in there that Su Zhirui needed to make with her own hands. In the end, he still touched what he wasn’t allowed to touch, and still took what he wasn’t allowed to use. Su Zhirui suddenly realized she had married a hooligan, and immediately sat on the ground, sobbing uncontrollably.

“You wretch who deserves a thousand cuts! Fine, leave if you want to leave, but you were gone for more than ten days! More than ten days is one thing, but you wouldn’t even leave me a single grain of rice! What do you take me for, ever-changing refined steel or the Thousand-Armed Guanyin? When I made the stool, I rubbed so many blisters onto my hands. When I went into the fields, leeches burrowed into the soles of my feet. When I hunted game, branches scratched my thighs. When I repaired the roof, I fell flat on my back with all four limbs in the air.” Su Zhirui only kept crying and complaining, somewhat incoherent. But seeing that Yi Feng still had no reaction, she immediately felt she was only making a fool of herself. She got up, wiped her tears, stopped crying, and went back to the yard to continue roasting her game.

Why get angry with herself?

“I went to look for people. Tomorrow I’ll take you to move.” The man suddenly appeared behind Su Zhirui and said this blandly. Then he turned to leave, but Su Zhirui immediately grabbed him and stopped him in his tracks. “My great lord, please don’t tell me that the fields I worked so hard to plant are going to be wasted and ruined just because you say we’re moving.”

“Is there a problem?”

“A very big problem.”

“Don’t tell me you were actually counting on the grain you planted to produce a harvest?” Yi Feng walked to the edge of the field with a smile that was not quite a smile and reached out to lift the shelter she had set up. Only then did he discover that the seeds she had just scattered were already floating in the excess water in the paddy field.

“None of your business!” Su Zhirui roared defiantly. Failure was the mother of success. Next time, it wouldn’t happen again.
