Chapter 38

Chapter 38 Supernatural Ashes

7 min read1,573 words

Even though Sadako’s current supernatural power was incomplete, the derivative Sadakos formed by the curse were still somewhat lacking when it came to offense.

They lacked a means of attack that could stack resonance from a distance, and could only go up and make contact while streaming ghost blood.

Their numbers did not grow quickly enough either, making it difficult to rapidly form an “infinite” tide.

But relying on the current level alone, once their numbers were built up even slightly, it would be enough to drown those ordinary ghost handlers who used their own lives to control fierce ghosts.

Unless they were anomalies who had resolved the problem of ghost resurgence, they would not be able to outlast Wang Liang.

This was also the confidence Wang Liang had in not fearing whether the folk organizations in Da’an City were up to something.

But the old woman burning things in the center remained unmoved.

She was still like a rigid, rusted machine, using those corpse-spotted hands of hers to toss all manner of strange things into the fire basin in front of her, sending up even more sparks.

The closer the spread of the black ghost blood came to the old woman, the slower it became. Large swaths of sparks fell, mutually annihilating with the ghost blood, making it hiss and sputter as though it were about to boil.

The derivative Sadakos stepped across the ghost blood and advanced, emitting a cold, sinister chill as they tried to come into contact with the old woman.

Ordinary flames could not harm fierce ghosts, but these sparks in the air were likewise some special manifestation of the supernatural.

The instant the sparks touched Sadako, they formed clumps of dark-orange ghost fire.

Some derivative Sadakos were ignited, their supernatural power treated as fuel.

Once flames had completely flared up around a derivative Sadako, she would also rise into the air and fly toward the old woman’s fire basin, disappearing into the air when she drew near.

Others, though wreathed in firelight, also began to have black ghost blood flowing down their bodies, extinguishing part of the flames. This supported the derivative Sadakos as they drew ever closer to the old woman.

But even with more than a dozen derivative Sadakos sharing the sparks thrown up at the same time, and with the supernatural ghost blood assisting in suppressing them,

at most, those derivative Sadakos could approach to within three meters of the old woman’s ghostly body while burning with firelight before they were completely devoured by the strange dark-orange flames and vanished.

This result made Wang Liang’s expression turn solemn. Never mind that this damn thing’s hazard level was only C-rank; its terror level was clearly very high.

Moreover, its supernatural power was a group attack over an entire area, which happened to counter the current Sadako, who lacked a powerful lethal supernatural ability.

It was a very dangerous, terrifying fierce ghost.

Wang Liang narrowed his eyes, knowing that if this attrition continued, the result would be no different. He needed to use a stronger supernatural power to invade the space in front of that old-woman ghost.

“Hah. Then let’s try this.”

Wang Liang applied Sadako’s and the ghost blood’s supernatural powers to himself. At that moment, his body became gaunt, his skin ghastly pale—not the color of a living person’s body, but rather like a corpse that had died in a freezer dozens of days ago.

Strands of black ghost blood seeped out from beneath the skin all over his body, and a dense, sinister chill enveloped him.

Then he personally stepped forward, entering the range of the sparks, treading on the ghost blood as he tried to use his main body to invade the old woman’s side.

One crimson-orange spark after another flickered in the air, staining and clinging to Wang Liang’s body, igniting on contact.

A burning pain came, but Wang Liang remained unmoved and continued forward.

Ghost fire burned on Wang Liang’s body. Even though ghost blood flowed over him, parts of his clothing still began to burn.

The ghost fire ignited by the sparks burned through his clothes, broke through the ghost blood, then adhered to Wang Liang’s ghastly pale skin and continued scorching him, engaging in a supernatural confrontation with Sadako’s power.

But with Wang Liang’s own body serving as the battlefield for that confrontation, there was no way he would be the victor.

The skin scorched by the firelight rapidly turned charred black, and his flesh was burned away.

But he gritted his teeth and forcibly endured the ghost fire on his body, quickly pressing forward. Very soon, he reached the limit the derivative Sadakos had been able to reach: three meters in front of the old woman.

Wang Liang took a step forward, breaking into the three-meter range.

He was not completely ignited and sent away, but this seemed to have broken through a critical point. The old woman crouching on the ground burning things finally underwent a new change.

The old woman, whose face was covered in corpse spots, stiffly raised her head to look at Wang Liang, her neck making a series of horrifying cracking sounds.

Those eyes looking at Wang Liang were numb and hollow, without a trace of emotion belonging to the living—only an eerie, deathly stillness like that of a dead thing.

The old woman reached one withered hand into the fire basin. The dark-orange ghost fire inside the basin was actually scorching the old woman’s aged, shriveled hand as well.

But after scooping around in the basin, the old woman soon lifted her hand, clenching a handful of ashes in her palm, and scattered them toward Wang Liang.

“What is this?!”

The ashes flew into his face. Wang Liang barely managed to raise an arm to block in front of him, but these ashes did not burn his body like those sparks had.

After the ashes were scattered over him, Wang Liang only felt the surroundings changing rapidly, his sense of direction falling into chaos.

When his vision became clear again, he discovered that he was no longer at the intersection on Changxing Road.

This was a stretch of wasteland. Flames burned in patches across the ground.

Within the firelight were corpses being scorched one after another. At a rough estimate, there were dozens of them. Some had even already been burned down to nothing but charred skeleton frames.

Wang Liang even saw Brother Tie’s and the fatty’s corpses nearby, burning a few meters in front of him.

From time to time, a piece of a corpse would vanish. Judging from the edges of the gaps, it looked as though someone had forcibly ripped it off.

The distance was hazy with mist, making it impossible to see the specific scenery. The sky was dim, and a cold wind blew faintly past.

This place was clearly no longer reality. It should be some supernatural land isolated from reality.

“The ability this old-woman ghost possesses isn’t a ghost domain, but sending people into a supernatural land! An ability similar to the ghost bus?”

Wang Liang quickly reacted, shock hard to conceal on his face.

“Tsk. A terrifying fierce ghost like this… even if Sun Su hadn’t died on Metro Line 16, he would have died here sooner or later. Although its hazard level is only C-rank, this old thing is far too terrifying. It’s probably a ghost handler from the Republican era whose fierce ghost resurged after death.”

However, Wang Liang did not lose composure too much because of this sudden teleportation. In truth, he instead let out a slight breath of relief in his heart. As long as it was not a true ghost domain, that was fine.

Ghost blood flowed down his body, extinguishing the ghost fire burning on him.

Without the vast number of sparks endlessly rushing forward to attach and ignite, this bit of firelight soon dissipated.

At this moment, Wang Liang’s clothes had already been burned away over large areas. Half his face had been burned into disfigurement, the skin on his body was charred black, portions of his flesh were scorched and rotting, and half his left arm was reduced to nothing but charred bone. He looked utterly miserable.

It was only by relying on the fierce ghost inside him that he could barely maintain the vitality of this body.

Wang Liang sensed the supernatural gray lines extending out from Sadako’s power. After confirming that even this supernatural land could not obstruct Sadako’s alternative restart, he relaxed.

However, he was not in a hurry to restart and leave this place. Since that old-woman ghost had sent him to this ghostly place, Wang Liang planned to take the opportunity to see whether, after two-thirty in the morning in reality, the old-woman ghost recorded as disappearing from Changxing Road would appear here.

If it was truly as he thought, then even though he currently did not possess a ghost domain, he might still have a chance to successfully contain this terrifying fierce ghost.

Thud. Thud.

Two more corpses burning with firelight appeared in this wasteland. Wang Liang looked over and confirmed that they were the last man and woman who had come with Brother Tie tonight.

“So, never recklessly court death. There’s a reason the road was sealed off, yet you just had to come here looking for thrills.”
