Chapter 11 "Good Stuff!"

6 min read1,402 words

“Are you hurt?”

Chen Fan looked toward Lame Monkey, who stood nearby holding a long spear.

“No.”

Lame Monkey shook his head, still breathing hard with lingering fear. “Young Master, that eerie creature was at least Level 3. If not for these two arrow towers, we might have died here today.”

“Get to work.”

He said nothing more, merely signaling for Lame Monkey to throw the beast traps into the darkness and begin tonight’s hunt.

Since that big fellow had already been driven away, they could work as usual tonight.

The arrow towers could only attack eerie creatures within the range of the eerie fire. They were good for defense, but somewhat lacking when it came to taking the initiative.

About an hour passed.

Chen Fan’s brows furrowed slightly. After a brief pause, he said, “I don’t think we’ll gain anything tonight. Let’s go back inside and sleep first. We’ll talk after daybreak.”

An hour had gone by, and not a single beast trap had stirred.

Not one monkey-headed ghost had appeared.

Something about this situation was off. He did not know whether the monkey-headed ghosts nearby had all been killed, or if they had been called away by that big fellow earlier.

He knew too little about the situation in the Evernight.

Especially when it came to many things in this world. He needed a private tutor. He had to think of a way to abduct a teacher over. Information was extremely important.

He had just made five beast traps, and before he could even get started, there were already no eerie creatures to catch.

Only—

Wasn’t it said that the eerie creatures in the Evernight were endless? Even if he could not catch monkey-headed ghosts, there should have been other eerie creatures, right? How had it become completely empty just like that?

Half-asleep, Chen Fan drifted off on the bed.

Only three eerie stones remained.

If he did not think of a way to earn some more eerie stones, even the eerie fire would not be sustainable.

Lame Monkey slept on the floor inside the wooden hut.

“Young Master!”

“Young Master!”

In a daze, Chen Fan was woken by Lame Monkey’s urgent voice.

“What is it?”

Chen Fan rolled out of bed, rubbed his eyes, and walked out of the wooden hut. Why did Lame Monkey always wake up earlier than him? This fellow looked thin and frail, but his energy was far better than Chen Fan’s.

The next moment—

Chen Fan, who had just stepped out of the wooden hut, suddenly broke into a grin.

A dozen or so meters away from the camp, the monkey-headed ghost from last night was lying quietly on the ground, already dead. Clearly, after being heavily wounded last night and fleeing into the darkness, it had not taken more than a few steps before collapsing on the spot.

At this moment, several glowing items were scattered beside it.

If nothing unexpected happened, they should be the exotic treasures dropped after the monkey-headed ghost’s death.

Lame Monkey stood outside the wooden hut, calling out with an excited expression. Dawn had just broken, and the darkness had only recently receded. The sky was still dim and gray. At this hour, there was no way anyone would pass by their camp.

“Coming!”

The corners of Chen Fan’s mouth rose uncontrollably. He strode over to the monkey-headed ghost, picked up the two glowing items, and stuffed them into his robes. Fortunately, Lame Monkey had woken up early. Otherwise, someone else might have picked them up.

Of course—

The possibility was not high. After all, very few pedestrians passed through their area.

“I’ll dig out the eerie stones.”

Lame Monkey looked very excited. He removed the small knife from the wooden stick and began dissecting the corpse.

Ordinary low-level eerie creatures only had one eerie stone in their bodies, but this monkey-headed ghost clearly had more than one. After Lame Monkey cut open its monkey brain, he used the small knife to dig one eerie stone after another out of the flesh.

The whole process looked like digging out tonsil stones, one after another.

Strangely satisfying.

Soon, all the eerie stones had been dug out and neatly arranged on the ground.

A full 17 stones!

Adding the 3 eerie stones he already had, he now had 20 eerie stones.

“Not bad.”

Chen Fan nodded in considerable satisfaction. “Put away this monkey-headed ghost’s corpse. Place it in the haystack behind the wooden hut, together with the other monkey-headed ghost corpses. It might be useful in the future.”

Even if it was not useful, he had to hide it for now. If passersby saw this obviously unusual monkey-headed ghost corpse, they would certainly wonder whether it had dropped anything good, which would bring unnecessary trouble.

Most eerie creatures would not eat the corpses of their own kind.

Humans could not eat the corpses of eerie creatures either.

Aside from certain body parts that could be used as “eerie materials,” most corpses were burned on the spot.

Only then did he look at the two exotic treasures in his hand that emitted white light.

Anything that counted as an exotic treasure could not be artificially crafted, and its value would not be too low. In particular, after the mother and daughter he killed yesterday dropped the “Building Replication Stone” exotic treasure, his expectations for these two exotic treasures had grown quite high.

“It’d be great if it’s something that can expand my territory, or an exotic treasure that can continuously obtain eerie stones.”

Chen Fan clasped his hands together and murmured a prayer.

He was somewhat short on land right now.

The safe range of a Level 1 eerie fire was a diameter of ten meters. At this moment, within the range of his eerie fire, after placing the arrow towers, wooden hut, and eerie fire, there was no longer enough space to place a field. If the field was not placed within the eerie fire’s range, once the Evernight descended, the eerie creatures would ruin it completely.

He had originally been able to rely on “beast traps” to continuously hunt and obtain eerie stones.

But last night, the monkey-headed ghosts never appeared, so this source of eerie stones had also been cut off. Although he had just gained a considerable amount of eerie stones, it was not sustainable. How he would obtain eerie stones in the future was still a problem.

The first exotic treasure, like the monkey-head mushroom seed, was a seed-type exotic treasure.

It was wrapped in a thin membrane.

-

“Exotic Treasure Name”: Eerie Stone Vein Seed.

“Exotic Treasure Grade”: White.

“Exotic Treasure Effect”: Must be planted in a “field.” Maturation period is three days. After maturing, it can grow eerie stones. Eerie creature corpses must be used as fertilizer.

-

“Good stuff!”

Chen Fan laughed. Even if the other exotic treasure was trash, just this one exotic treasure alone made it worth it. It seemed that building a field had to be put on the agenda today.

He wondered how many eerie stones he could harvest.

Fortunately, he had kept all those monkey-headed ghost corpses. They could now be used as fertilizer.

He looked toward the other exotic treasure.

-

“Exotic Treasure Name”: God-Slaying Spear.

“Exotic Treasure Grade”: White.

“Exotic Treasure Effect”: Deals considerable damage to low-tier eerie creatures. Can change size at will.

-

“Not bad.”

With a thought from Chen Fan, the originally miniature spear in his hand instantly enlarged, turning into an extremely imposing long spear. The so-called changing size at will merely meant it could switch between its normal form and a miniature version.

There was no way to turn it into something dozens of meters long.

It could only be considered a pseudo size-changing ability.

It was a single-soldier weapon.

Compared to the crude long spears they had made out of wooden sticks and small knives, its effects were definitely much better.

“It’s yours.”

Chen Fan tossed the long spear in his hand into Lame Monkey’s arms, then strode toward the eerie fire. Although Lame Monkey was lame, both his physical quality and combat experience were a little stronger than Chen Fan’s.

This long spear would be able to play a greater role in Lame Monkey’s hands.

After returning to the camp again,

he took a deep breath, placed the 20 eerie stones on the ground, and slowly closed his eyes.
