In the meantime, users had begun gathering around us. Behind me, the Bia were packed in a crowd; behind Retake, the Jeopa were swarming. It was probably because of the ridiculous state we were in, spread through Retake’s stream.
Fortunately, no one tried to kill either of us. When one single Jeopa tried to charge at me, the Bia nearby killed only that Jeopa, then backed off again and watched us from a distance.
I wasn’t watching the stream, so I couldn’t tell what was going on, but maybe Retake had finally pulled himself together after laughing his head off for ages, because I saw his character wriggle after me.
Seeing that, I jumped in place a few times to tell him not to attack first. I’d already appealed in chat that we were friends, so he wouldn’t take it as a signal to attack first, right? Sure enough, Retake obediently jumped after me. Okay, then.

I couldn’t find a special character to replace “have,” so after agonizing over it, I tacked on commas. Still, he’d probably understand. We’d often talked like this, and Retake was an intelligent human being, just like his job—a military doctor.

Retake, who had been standing still to read my chat, soon typed exclamation marks and jumped. The sight really did feel like the reaction of a children’s cartoon character, so it was cute.

With that chat as the last word, Retake opened the scholarly tome that was the military doctor’s exclusive weapon and lightly gripped his quill, taking a battle stance. It was already 48?
Apparently, because I’d come out dressed like this, Retake had spent all that time laughing his head off. It was a shame I hadn’t been able to fight more because of the unexpected situation, but the fact that I’d made Retake laugh for so long was quite rewarding.
After quickly clearing my head, I hurriedly pressed the combat switch key and gripped my sword and shield. A blue aura spread like dry ice inside an ice cream wrapper. The situation was funny—red and blue facing each other while countless users watched—but since this was today’s last fight, I had to get serious.
Retake first wrapped his own character in basic buffs. One buff with a very short cast time, and two non-casting buffs with no cast time because they were part of a combo. There was nothing to gain by rushing in then, so I waited until he finished applying the buffs.
In the instant when the motion of him scribbling something in the scholarly tome with his quill flashed by, I saw Retake subtly switch the hands holding the tome and the quill. It was almost as fast as palming a card from the bottom of the deck, so I nearly failed to notice.

As I jotted down a note so I wouldn’t forget that Retake’s main weapon, the scholarly tome, had moved to his right hand, I suddenly came to my senses.
Retake was holding the scholarly tome in his right hand?

In Dusk, left-handed and right-handed characters existed. A character who chose left-handedness had increased attack power and attack speed when holding a weapon in the left hand, while holding a weapon in the right hand slowed attack speed but raised defensive stats. For right-handed characters, it applied in reverse.
Retake’s character was left-handed. When I’d seen him applying buffs earlier, he had been holding his main weapon, the scholarly tome, in his left hand, and his secondary weapon, the quill, in his right. In that state, Retake had a proper balance of attack and defense.
But just now, Retake had swapped the positions of the scholarly tome and the quill like he was palming a card. This meant that with his main weapon in his right hand, his attack power would drop, but his defensive stats would rise, maximizing his healing amount and the abilities of certain protection and buff skills.
He would become a healing-specialized character who couldn’t kill the enemy and couldn’t die himself.

TIP - Vigor is a skill resource consumed when using evasion and defense techniques. The higher your Health, the more maximum Vigor you have, and the higher your Control, the less Vigor is consumed.
