Chapter 9

Chapter 9: A Young Genius on the Rise?

8 min read1,875 words

The sudden choke made Yang Yu feel the pressure mounting like a mountain.

He really was in peak form this game. He even felt as though he had entered that “flow” state, where everything he did just worked.

The problem was that his teammates weren’t quite in form this game. Their timing had been just a little off these past few rounds, and the other side had strung together several points in a row.

Round twenty-six began.

“Come on, come on, brothers. Don’t rush. Let’s take it slow.”

As the player at the bottom of the team, Wanjiqi’s desire to win had reached its peak.

Yang Yu was also feeling a little numb. He said, “Let’s control the map first this round. Can we do an execute later?”

In a highly competitive game like CSGO, your scoreline was something even more terrifying than India’s caste system.

Once the top fragger spoke, the entire team immediately began to execute.

Yang Yu brought his teammate Purple to A1 to play default.

The other two teammates went to mid at the start to take map control.

As the team’s utility player, after Wanjiqi threw the Window smoke, he transformed into a rat and headed toward underpass to support them.

After Yang Yu arrived at A1, he had originally only intended to gather some information and listen for whether anyone had come up Palace.

But after the other side threw anti-rush fire at A1, they followed it up with a smoke near A1 close.

When Yang Yu saw that smoke, he keenly noticed a tiny gap on the left side of it.

To him, that made it a one-way smoke.

As long as someone moved from the left side of the smoke to the right, he would be able to see the crossing information.

Yang Yu had a very good habit. When holding this kind of smoke, his crosshair was not aimed at that tiny little gap, but at the standard headshot line.

Because he knew very clearly that as long as he got the information when someone crossed, it meant there was a player there. At that point, spamming through the smoke for a headshot was the optimal play.

His patient wait soon paid off.

Very quickly, he saw that thin gap get blocked. Yang Yu immediately pulled the trigger and fired straight through the smoke.

“Da-da-da!”

[Calm Down a Little killed Occasionally Whiffs—Often Occasionally with an AK47 headshot through smoke]

“One down A1!” Yang Yu gave the callout to his teammates. “Can you come with me?”

Just now, Yang Yu had already gotten information that there were players at Window and short B respectively. That meant there was most likely only one person left on A. If they could trade one-for-one and take the A site, the situation would become clear.

Before Yang Yu had even finished speaking, he saw Purple charging up fiercely. Seeing that, Yang Yu could only follow.

“Triple! Triple!”

The instant Yang Yu swung out, he saw his teammate get killed. He immediately pulled his muzzle toward Triple, sprayed while controlling his recoil, and successfully traded the CT at Triple.

While reloading, Yang Yu picked up the C4 from Purple’s corpse. Then he casually threw a connector smoke under balcony and moved straight toward the bombsite. “I’m planning to plant on A. Can you guys come to me?”

“Don’t rush. We’re coming from connector.”

“There’s still one Window. Be careful.”

His teammates’ voices came through comms, exchanging information and callouts.

Yet within two seconds, three kill notifications drifted across the upper-right corner.

“B apps pushed up into underpass! One market retaking, and there’s still an AWP Window.” Wanjiqi listed out the information on the enemy’s three remaining players as if reciting from memory, then muted his mic and muttered to his stream, “It’s over. We’re about to collapse like a routed army~ Can we still not do it?”

The viewers in the stream were also utterly speechless.

[Brother Calm killed two and left three, and the four of you are kind of insane for this]

[Brother Calm has his very own Mr. Bean even on the ladder]

[How many more does your teammate have to kill for you!]

[Wanjiqi really is a bit ÷ this game]

[Jijizi plus these three random teammates, not a single poet among them]

[Pig-head meat, do something! Even just take a bite for big bro!]

Wanjiqi was helpless too. “I’m really not in form today. And I feel like something’s off about this game. The other side doesn’t seem like locals.”

After complaining, he turned his attention back to the screen.

Two kills, three left. This clutch was his teammates’ test for him.

Yang Yu felt a little helpless inside, but he also knew that if he could win this kind of difficult match, it would push his skill another step forward.

In a 1v3 clutch, the other side had also confirmed his position. The time and space left to him were not enough for a rotation.

Relying on the positional information he still had, Yang Yu chose to plant the bomb directly behind Triple.

After the bomb was planted, Yang Yu first peeked connector. After confirming there was no one there, he quickly moved toward the short boxes.

Footsteps!

They were coming from balcony!

Yang Yu keenly heard the information, but he did not rush to take action. Instead, he moved to the right side of the short boxes and held his crosshair firmly on Triple.

Very soon, a fly-head peeked out from balcony.

Yang Yu seized the opportunity and fired a short burst with the AK47.

“Da-da-da!”

There was a slight mistake in his spray, but the other side had not realized Yang Yu was in this position, allowing him to seize the chance.

“That was the Window AWP! The remaining two are the underpass guy and the market retake,” a teammate’s rapid callout came through comms.

Yang Yu’s brows were tightly furrowed as he quickly began to think.

He did not know what angle the market player would move toward. He was not sure whether the other side would group up or pinch him.

Compared to gambling on timing and getting someone’s side, his aim felt excellent today. His odds in a straight duel were much clearer.

These thoughts flashed through his mind, and Yang Yu made his decision.

Guarding against the jungle direction, he held his AK47 and silently moved toward A1.

He walked the entire way quietly and smoothly arrived at the A1 balcony area.

At that instant, he saw a Molotov fly from balcony toward the short boxes.

One confirmed balcony.

Yang Yu was watching out for balcony, but his crosshair was aimed at CT spawn, because he still was not sure of the second player’s position.

Wanjiqi suddenly called out, “Two at balcony! I heard footsteps!”

Yang Yu immediately turned his muzzle back. Very soon, he also heard the footsteps of both opponents.

As the C4 ticked away on the bombsite, the two remaining CTs finally could no longer hold themselves back and began actively pushing toward CT spawn.

Hearing the enemy footsteps rushing over, Yang Yu locked his crosshair in place.

The instant he saw the first CT, he pulled the trigger with the AK47.

“Bang!”

The first bullet successfully struck the opponent in the head. Yang Yu then dragged his muzzle toward the cover and began suppressive fire.

After the last opponent confirmed Yang Yu’s position, he also swung out with his crosshair pre-aimed.

Both sides poured fire into each other nonstop.

But amid the suppressive spray, Yang Yu successfully landed another headshot!!

“Got it!!! Hah—” Yang Yu let out a long breath and, in a rare moment of excitement, shouted.

“Holy shit~”

“Holy shit…”

In voice chat, aside from gasps of amazement, no one had anything else to say. In this ladder match, Yang Yu was truly a heaven-reaching carry. He had racked up three aces in total, and all of them had come from full rifle rounds.

With a teammate like that, what else was there to say?

Perfect World, there’s nothing wrong with your matchmaking!

Even the other side complained in all chat: “You’re actually cheating, aren’t you?”

They truly had no way out. In this round, they had already exhausted all their strength and methods.

Their winning streak had been broken, and in the final round, Yang Yu’s side simply flattened them and took the game.

In the end, the score on Mirage was fixed at 16:11.

Yang Yu had also dragged four teammates to victory in this ranked match with great difficulty.

“Insane, insane. Brother, you really carried way too hard.” Wanjiqi had the smile of someone who had won while lying down, and began exchanging commercial praise with everyone.

“It was all right, all right. Everyone played pretty well,” Yang Yu said with a laugh.

He did not have any mentality issues because of the difficult match. On the contrary, he felt that the high-pressure games over the past week had improved his level quite a bit.

He was actually rather happy to run into these one-carry-four games now.

After they said goodbye to one another, Yang Yu continued on to his next ladder match and kept grinding points.

Meanwhile, Wanjiqi was still grinning foolishly in his stream. “Brothers, do you understand? With the way my aim felt today, I really didn’t expect us to win this one.”

He looked at the final scoreboard.

“Holy shit, this guy is genuinely ridiculous. In twenty-seven rounds, he dropped forty-two kills. He can really fucking kill!”

“This guy is genuinely accurate. An 88% headshot rate? He’s way too good at popping heads. On his screen, everything is really just heads!”

Wanjiqi’s headshot rate was not high. Unless his kill count was very low, a statistic like an 88% headshot rate was extremely rare in his ladder career—he might not have even achieved it before.

“Today, I really got hard carried by this viewer.” Wanjiqi leaned back comfortably in his gaming chair. “I truly lay down for this one.”

Immediately afterward, he suddenly sat upright and defended himself. “But I’m telling you guys, in this game, I really felt like the other side’s level was pretty good. So many times, I saw them and got instantly deleted, you know? They probably weren’t locals.”

As he spoke, he directly began checking the opponents’ backgrounds.

“Last season S… last season Diamond S… this one is a local… this one was two points off S last season, kind of tragic… this one got carried up to S…”

After looking through the other side’s profiles, Wanjiqi complained, “So in the end, they only had one A-rank local, huh. No wonder I couldn’t beat them.”

“Hiss—” Wanjiqi sucked in a breath and said somewhat doubtfully, “But logically speaking, at our rank, we shouldn’t be getting matched against this group of queued S-ranks!”

As he spoke, he casually clicked open Yang Yu’s stats.

Wanjiqi froze.

He had found the reason.

Displayed strikingly on his screen were the words:

ID: Calm Down a Little.

Season rating: 1.58

Headshot rate: 77.7%

Bro, you’re a prodigy!!

……

A little late. I feel like this short plotline dragged on a bit, so I’ll streamline things more later…
